What causes menstrual cramps?

Being a woman, your body undergoes numerous changes throughout life. Initially, you go through the development of certain body parts like breasts, hairs under your arms and genital area and adding to it, are the psychological changes. By the time you learn to adjust to these changes, the time for menstruation cycle arrives that brings a long list of discomforts and problems with it. This causes a lot of discomfort and with it comes major stress. The pain is felt in the lower abdomen, possibly extending to the hips, lower back or thighs. Some may also experience nausea, fever, vomiting, diarrhea and body aches. Mild abdominal cramps on the first two days of your menses are nothing to be worried about but, there are almost 10 % of girls out there who get unable to manage their routine tasks unless they take some medication.

There are two types of dynsmenorrhoea,

1. primary dynsmenorrhoea- if you do not experience any underlying gynecologic disorder, then the pain is primary dynsmenorrhoea. Generally, it is caused by high levels of prostaglandin (a substance that makes the uterus muscles contract and shed its lining). Though this is painful, yet it is not dangerous in any case. It almost disappears as you enter into mid20s or after you have a baby.

2. secondary dynsmenorrhoea- pain caused by some underlying gynecologic disorder is called secondary dynsmenorrhoea. The reason may be the presence of a fibroid tumor (a benign tumor in your uterus wall). This is a sexually transmitted disease (STD), endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease or an ovarian cyst or tumor.

Bronchitis is inflammation of bronchi or air passages that carry air to lungs. People suffering from bronchitis see a heightening of this disease in damp climate.

In Ayurveda, bronchitis is termed as kasa roga (casa roga). According to Ayurveda concepts, germs cause this disease. However, accumulation of phlegm in the digestive tract after indigestion is the primary reason for bronchitis.

Tulsi (Holy Basil Ocimum sanctum), adathoda (Adathoda vasika), linseed, etc are used in the treatment of bronchitis.

Tulsi leaves also form constituent of several Ayurvedic preparations aimed at treating bronchitis. The other herbs are used in the concoctions (Ayurvedic preparations). They give the best results when used in the right proportions in the combination.

Precautionary measures include avoiding exposure to humidity, dust and other allergens.

You should also take care of your food and diet. Include a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables in your daily diet. Avoid smoking, alcohol and other addictives. Canned foods items are also best avoided. Easy to digest food items should form the main meals. Eat lots of fibrous food items and avoid the chances of constipation. Problems in digestion are the beginning point of bronchitis and you need to take extreme care in ensuring you have smooth digestion.
